1978 Yamaha TZ250

We are nearly complete with our work on restoring a 1978 Yamaha TZ250. It is owned by a good customer and friend who shares our passion for motorcycles. Having been a fixture of the shop for a number of years, we’re both excited and proud to share its progress.

This unique two-cycle race bike is true to its nature with no starter motor or kick starter. To get it running, one must bump start it. It has an estimated top speed of 160 mph and its peppy spirit isn’t for the faint of heart or those wanting to simply “putt” around town.

We began the project by doing a complete tear-down, and sent the frame out to be powder-coated. While waiting for the frame to get done, we took the engine apart to be inspected and cleaned. Any worn parts were replaced- including the pistons and rings. Next, we sandblasted and painted the exhaust and replaced the tires and tubes.

Ready to race!

Many of the rubber pieces suffered from severe dry rot due to their age and needed replaced. The rubber flap behind the rear wheel, foot-peg rubber, and speedometer mount all had to be sourced from Mead Speed out of England.

Carbon fiber hydro-dip!

The fiberglass body had to have hairline cracks repaired before receiving a custom paint job with a red carbon fiber hydro-dip inlay. The suspension proved tricky but we were eventually able to revalve the front forks. The rear mono-shock could not be serviced due to its factory seal, but thankfully is performing well despite its age.

Custom Seat

We sent the seat out for a custom fabrication, replacing the tired foam that was falling apart with a superior, covered seat. We also installed a new windscreen that helped complete this machine’s transformation. Once the pinstriper adds some custom lettering, we will apply the race sticker number “27” and this project will be entirely complete.

We cannot wait for updates on the exciting adventures that this vintage beauty will soon embark on!
