The Do’s and Don’ts of Motorcycle Insurance

This month we sat down with Allstate Insurance agent and long-time customer Darren Brown to answer some of the more common questions we get here at the shop regarding motorcycle insurance coverage.

Q: Should I cancel my motorcycle insurance in the Winter?

A: No, because many companies offer a prior discount and if you cancel your policy for the winter this eliminates this discount.

Q: If not, do you recommend any policy changes at all?

A: Many people will lower their liability limits down to state minimum, remove medical coverage and uninsured motorist coverage & any optional overages.

Q: How do I ensure that all of my upgrades/accessories are covered, too?

A: These are often referred to as optional equipment, some companies have limitations/stipulations such as custom paint, I would recommend discussing with your agent.

Q: I know that not all tow-trucks are equipped with the ability to tow motorcycles. What do you recommend in terms of roadside assistance that can tow bikes?

A: Some companies offer this optional coverage with their policies at a very reasonable price, we only use flat bed tow trucks.

Q: Does motorcycle insurance cover track days?

A: NO. Insurance companies will NOT cover any vehicle used in a completion for money or prize.

Q: What if I’m participating in track days not for money or prize, but rather to strengthen my riding skills- such as a riding school or defensive riding course?

A: With our company it is covered since it is not a competition, and I would imagine with most companies it would be.

Q: Will my motorcycle insurance will cover other riders?

A: Many companies do not cover other riders, this is a subject you should definitely ask your agent before lending your bike to anyone.

Q: Any other advice you’d recommend to motorcyclists regarding their insurance policies?

A: I would point out something that I see a lot of people who come in, their current policy doesn’t cover uninsured motorists bodily injury and also does not cover any medical expenses. I recommend that they ask their agent if these are covered on their policy. The time to find out is NOT when they need them. I was one of the designers of the Allstate motorcycle policy and it is the most complete bike policy available in the country both coverage and price.
